Botanical Name:Rosa chinensis 'Duchesse de Brabant'

The tea rose Rose Duchesse de Brabant is an old favourite and is highly sought after. It grows to 180cm high and spreads to 120cm wide, even in rather neglected conditions. The flowers are a delicate pink with a strong fragrance, ranked 8/10 by experts. The pink flowers begin as a tulip or goblet shaped bloom, with the rounded petals slowing loosening as the bloom opens. It is repeat flowering and the flowers appear in large clusters, beginning in spring.

The parent plants are unknown, but this rose was named for the Duke of Brabant, Belgium. It was introduced to France in 1857, by Bernede. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful roses ever bred. President Roosevelt also contributed to the fame and popularity of this rose by wearing the pink blooms in his buttonhole. Other names include Comtesse de Labarathe and Comtesse Ouwaroff.

Growing Conditions

Duchess de Brabant is a hardy rose, even when neglected. It is ideally suited to Australian conditions and this has made it very popular, in addition to its other attributes. As with most roses, full sun is the best aspect. It requires good moisture levels while becoming established over the first few months, but then has average water requirements. It does have good resistance to powdery mildew, but given the size of this rose it is good to give the plant enough space to allow for good air circulation. Damp, closed in spaces will not yield good results.

As noted above this tea rose is a tall and wide growing plant. Sufficient space is needed for optimum growth and blooming. It is an ideal specimen plant or an excellent border plant if planted in groups of 3 or 5 plants.
