Botanical Name: Heliotropium arborescens

Heliotrope ‘White’ is an evergreen shrub, which reaches a height of 80cm by a width of 80cm. It has broad green leaves of an oval to elliptical shape, with a rugose character. The fragrant small white flowers are held in clusters above the leaves from spring to summer.

This Heliotrope is also known as ‘Alba’ and is a variety of Heliotropium arborescens. The original native habitat of the parent plant is Peru, where it grows over a wide range of habitats.

Caution: All parts of the plant are toxic so care should be taken with pets and children.

For further information please see Heliotropium arborescens ‘Cherry Pie’.

Growing Conditions

Heliotrope ‘White’ grows in full sun to part shade, but may require extra protection from the harsh Australian sun in summer. It prefers fertile soil, with good drainage and regular water. Damp, wet or heavy clay soil is not tolerated well, and despite the tropical origins this plant does not like humidity. Heliotropes are subject to frost tenderness and will not survive freezing temperatures. They do well in containers and may be taken indoors for winter protection. In many areas of the world with cold winters Heliotropes are treated like annuals with new seed or plants to start each season. Regular pruning helps to keep the plant in good shape and provides cuttings for propagation.
