Botanical Name:Atriplex cinerea

Coastal saltbush also known as grey saltbush, barilla or truganini, is found in most states in coastal regions. It grows between 1- 2m high and similar in width. The silver-grey lance-shaped to oblong leaves are up to 10cm long. Clusters of cream flowers appear in Spring-Autumn

Growing Conditions

Coastal saltbush thrives on a range of soil types ranging from front-line coastal dunes to coastal marshlands, with an alkaline pH. They prefer full sun to part shade. Water regularly when first planted to establish. Tolerates dry periods, salty soil, light frost and coastal winds.

Culinary Uses

Like its close relative Oldman saltbush the leaves can be used for their salty, herby flavour for stuffings, marinades or simply cooked by blanching or boiling like spinach. Toss them in stir-frys. The leaves can be dried and used as a salt substitute. If you find the leaves too salty, steep in water to remove salt and rinse thoroughly.

Other uses

Attracts native butterflies, caterpillar food plant. Fire retardant plant. Suitable fodder for sheep and cattle
